Saturday, July 7th! Cookie contest!

Posted by Josh on July 5th, 2007 in General.

hey gang, this weekend at the store we’re having a vegan cookie bake off! come by at 2 pm and eat your guts out!

I’d tell you more about the competition but we sent out press releases around town and the Willamette Week did a wonderful piece on us, it is pasted below. For a second I thought a drunken Republican hick wrote it before I realized Mr. Smith was a, I’m sure, highly educated journalist of the highest ethical and moral standards. Well done Mr. Smith! And kudos for not being a stereotypical vegan hater.

From the Willamette Week:

SATurday, JULY 7

I Spell Trust M-E-A-T

It List is a keen judge of character. For instance, from the moment I heard of him, I totally knew Hitler was no good. The same goes for Hannibal Lecter, the Olsen twins and Godzilla. How do I see so clearly into the soul of humanity? The Bacon Principle. It’s simple: People who don’t eat bacon aren’t rational and cannot be trusted. Therefore, I won’t even shake hands with vegans. They’ll probably try to steal my watch and extract the non-animal-based protein from it. Now they’ve invented another affront to civilized society with a “vegan cookie contest.” Local vegan-cookbook authors will compete for Portland’s “Best Vegan Cookie” title—a category so qualified it’s meaningless. It’s like deciding the world’s fastest car by racing a Yugo against a three-legged dog. These tempeh-loving tricksters are spreading filthy rumors about our city, calling Portland the “vegan Mecca.” That’s just offensive. But I’m not discouraging anyone from attending this competition. Free vegan cookies will be handed out, which every undecided eater should sample—there’s no better tool for recruiting carnivores. The Herbivore Store, 5519 NE 30th Ave., 281-8638. 2 pm. Free. All ages.

This sounds fun. What neighborhood is Heribore located in? I’m from out of town and would like to know what else is nearby like shops and restaurants. Thanks!

    (My response)

I am writing in response to the above-referenced article. Admittedly, I live in Philadelphia; however, I happened to come upon Smith’s blurb when reading a friend’s blog who had posted pictures of the Herbivore cookie event.

Mr. Smith sure does has a funny way of measuring trust. Never mind that, by eating meat and dairy, a person is saying that their taste buds are more important than another being’s life, or that they don’t care to know about the environmental ramnifcations of their diet, or that the grains fed to these non-human animals in an effort to obtain their flesh is a complete waste of food that could directly be used to feed starving human children, Mr. Smith does not trust those who do not want to partake in violence! He doesn’t want a handshake, does he? He wants someone to punch him in the face! That’s a sure sign of love.

Further, with regard to cookies, I’m guessing that Smith has never tried a cookie that he knew was vegan. He could have definitely had a vegan cookie and didn’t know it, the adjective of “vegan” not being noteworthy to him at the time, nor to the person who gave him the cookie. I will say that, during my five years or so as a vegan, I have made many desserts. As an omnivore, I had made many desserts as well; I was known as the baker in my family. Vegan desserts, as a whole, are far superior in taste, texture, quality, and, most of all, purity. Butter and eggs do not add flavor, unless you count that spoiled milk taste that is left in your mouth after you eat cow secretions.

Of course, by the author’s logic, the very people Hitler hated the most are also horrible, since many of them also didn’t eat bacon. Some people are just stupid, imo. Evil people eat all kinds of things. Oh, and not all Republicans are carnivores … I have a very good friend who is vegan and conservative politically.
